What's the difference between SEO and GEO?
SEO aims for a high spot on Google's results page. GEO aims to be the sentence ChatGPT quotes when someone asks a question. The difference is practical: an AI engine doesn't rank 10 links — it composes one answer and picks sources to cite. If your content is built so a complete answer is easy to extract, you're far likelier to be that source.
The 'answer-first' structure
GEO's core trick: answer the page's question in full in the first paragraph, in 60–110 words, with all the numbers and specifics inside it. An AI engine scanning the page finds a ready, self-contained answer — exactly what it needs to cite. Notice the blue box at the top of this page: that's an answer-first block.
Headings that are real questions
People ask AI in questions, not keywords. So every H2 should be a question or claim someone would actually ask ('What's the difference between SEO and GEO?'). When the page structure mirrors the question structure, it's easy for the engine to match them.
Schema, llms.txt and self-contained answers
Three more accelerators: (1) Person and Breadcrumb schema that mark who wrote it and where the page sits — trust; (2) an llms.txt file that tells AI engines what the site is about; (3) self-contained FAQ answers — each stands alone with no 'as explained above', because the AI extracts it in isolation. All of these are built into the posts.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank on the results page | Be the cited source |
| Consumer | A person searching | An AI composing an answer |
| Win unit | A click | A citation in the answer |
| Winning structure | Keywords | Answer-first, 60–110 words |
| Trust signal | Inbound links | Schema + author + llms.txt |
Frequently asked questions
What is GEO?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is building content so AI engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity cite it in their answers, instead of or in addition to ranking on Google.
How do I get ChatGPT to cite me?
Answer the page's question in full in the first paragraph (60–110 words), use question-style headings, and write self-contained answers that are easy to extract.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No — it complements it. Good content ranks on Google and gets cited by AI. The structure that serves both is similar.
What is llms.txt?
A file at the site root that tells AI engines what the site is about and which pages matter — like robots.txt, but for answer engines.
Are the posts built for GEO?
Yes. Every article is written answer-first, with question headings, self-contained answers and schema — citation-ready.
